ReMix Institute Phase II Hits Hamilton Next Month

Hamilton’s art calendar for next month is going to be quite heavy on the Cubanos with the launch of various events and exhibitions of ReMix Institute Phase II across the Hamilton region. Continuing from Phase I of Proyecto ReMix in Cienfuegos and Havana, this international exchange brings together Cuban artists with participants from the Hamilton area for a series of site-responsive interventions.

The exhibitions most likely to impact your gallery-going experience in September will be opening during the next James North Art Crawl on September 11, and I’ll be sure to provide a run-down of those projects in the usual Preview post. But prior to that, there will be a series of projects launched on Labour Day weekend that are not to be missed for a complete ReMix experience. For my sense of organization as well as yours, here’s an itinerary of those events:

Sunday, September 6 at Pier IV

1:30-4 pm Workshop Performance: “how to try out for a fake rock band” with Popeye’s Golden Theory on tour from Cuba

Monday, September 7

9:30 am Labour Day Parade: Hop on the Art Bus with Cuban and Canadian artists; FREE to join the parade, meet on York Blvd @ Locke

11:00-2 pm @ Dundurn Park/Dundurn Castle/Cockpit/Garden

- Life studio in the garden with Sadko Hadzihasanovic, Anne Milne and Tanis MacArthur

- Installation by Bryce Kanbara, Dundurn Castle Court Yard

- Video by Fleur-Ange Lamothe, Dundurn Castle Cockpit

- Performances in Dundurn Park by the Cuban group Popeye’s Golden Theory, and local artists Wax Mannequin, Alan Flint, Ulysses Castellanos, Fleur-Ange Lamothe and Andrew McPhail.

1:00-4 pm Griffin House, 733 Mineral Springs Rd in Ancaster

- Installation by Delio Delgado

1:30 pm Art Bus departs from Dundurn Castle for a Tour to Ancaster with urban consultant Colina Maxwell, and to the Griffin House installation by Delio Delgado
(call 905.524.0606 for tour ticket $15, events are free or by donation)

5:00-7 pm Show continues @ The Pearl Company

While my profound civic responsibility will prevent me from attending the mid-afternoon events of the day, I hope to view the various interventions at the Dundurn Castle grounds earlier in the day - it’s a great historical site, and just exactly staid enough to enjoy a bit of a Cuban/Contemporary Art shake-up.
