Having devoted a fair chunk of time in the last couple weeks to helping The Print Studio rally together something resembling a marketing campaign - one of the joys of serving on the Board of Directors - I’ve become increasingly conscious of something that seems rather obvious in retrospect: the need for advance notice surrounding any art event. The more I think about it, the more I am forced to admit that the various venues of the James North Art Crawl has been rather lax in this regard, taking the umbrella awareness of the larger event as publicity enough to excuse any further efforts.
Recognizing both that gap and my own recent slackness in plugging content into this blog, I’ve decided that my coverage of this monthly event will now comprise two entries - a preview post on specific scheduled events as well as the traditional review after the fact. Seeing as this is a new feature, I hope readers will forgive the scarcity of content - the very nature of the problem I’m hoping to address here means that I don’t have access to all the galleries’ programs for tonight (though www.jamesstreetnorth.ca ‘will be back online really soon. Promise.’) Those I am aware of are as follows.
The Print Studio: Shelley Niro, ‘Warriors and Other Works’

Shelley Niro will be presenting photography, lithography and four large-scale, iconic woodcuts in this exhibition, the first of four exhibitions curated by Ingrid Mayrhofer in her On Surface series of shows for The Print Studio.
Hamilton Artists Inc.: Carl Brown, ‘Visual Alchemy / Ocular Alkahest’

Carl Brown’s exhibition of photo manipulations and film-inflected paintings will be familiar enough to those who attended last month’s crawl. For those of you who missed out, tonight is the closing reception for the exhibition, with the artist in attendance.
For a taste of something new from the Inc., there’s always a personal favourite of mine, the New Harbours Music Series over at Christ’s Church Cathedral. Tonight’s line-up features Rob Michalchuk, Annie Shaw and Mark Raymond.
Loose Canon: Christina Sealey
Hamilton-based painter Christina Sealey will be showing a range of both new and older work at Loose Canon. Her show will be on until the end of the month, and runs concurrently with her collaborative exhibition with Richard Oddie, ‘Living Spaces: Imagining Hamilton’ at the AGH until May 17.
This is, of course, excluding a significant number of exhibition venues along the street; hopefully, with some added effort from both artists and gallery owners along the street, I hope to have access to a longer list of previews for April’s crawl.
