As much as it feels like a betrayal of The Cause, in all likelihood I will not be attending the James North Art Crawl tonight as I will be away in Toronto for the opening of Mis[place]d: Animals Lost and Found at XPACE. But only because I have work in that show, namely ‘The Plagues’ - my installation of seventy-one drawings of rats frolicking in the ruins of ancient Rome.

Besides my own contribution, I’ve seen some really great work being installed in this same show - Laura Paolini’s weeping robot cat and Stephanie Kervin and Sylvana D’Angelo’s marching army of bunnies, to name but two examples - so it’s well worth seeing if I do say so myself.
And for all you readers out in Winnipeg (all three of you, last I checked), I’m participating in the group show con.text also opening tonight at cre8ery. I can’t speak for the show as a whole since I don’t yet have the ability to be in two places at once (really hoping to get that TARDIS for Christmas next time), but I’m told my four-part Bartitsu series ‘Love is a Battlefield’ did arrive in safe condition last month.

But obligations to Toronto and Winnipeg aside, I do want to take the opportunity to show some hometown love, especially since I was also a negligent no-show at last month’s Art Crawl due to seasonal-familial obligations. These things can be hard to predict, James North being something of a capricious beast, but running down the facts as I understand them:
+ Hamilton Artists Inc. is showing Michael’s Allgoewer’s three-part installation Empire - the parts that I managed to glimpse during our Board meeting earlier in the week looked plenty intriguing.
+The Inc. is also hosting an off-site happening at MEX-I-CAN Restaurant (129 James Street North, just a bit further south of the Inc.) with performances by Rita Kamacho and Ulysses Castellanos. Card games and clown paintings by a creepy clown, what more could you want?
+ The Print Studio is still closed for renovations, so feel free to browse that one by for now but be sure to drop in when they reopen next week.
+ Since I haven’t received any irate emails from Dane Pedersen to collect my painting, I think it’s safe to assume that his Winter Salon is carrying over into this month at Loose Canon.
+ You Me Gallery is kicking off the New Year with a group show of five painters: Maureen Paxton, Grace Loney, Diana Gordon, Dana Cowie, and Pascale Garrett.
+ Show and Tell Gallery is continuing to rotate through its Mac student members with a two-person show by Bernadette Funk and Patrick Leroux. They tend to present consistently awesome work at the crits I’ve attended so definitely make an effort to see this one, as it’s one night only, folks.
