I wasn’t able to attend last night’s Town Hall meeting in Toronto to discuss the myriad pending cuts to cultural funding programs at the hands of the Conservative government, but an mp3 download of the meeting is available from the good people of the newly mobilized Department of Culture. You’ll also find a video clip of Naomi Klein’s speech on the occasion, and opportunities to contribute to this organization’s efforts to curtail Harper’s own brand of counter-cultural nonsense.
With the lazy days of August behind us, and the prospect of a federal election on the horizon, there is a definite necessity for action and dialogue on all cultural matters - in short, after the last few weeks of my unannounced mental semi-vacation, regular blogging activity here will be recommencing starting this weekend with the opening of Matthew Varey’s solo exhibition Growing Up In Hamilton at Transit Gallery this Friday night.
In the present climate, I’d much rather stick to what I know and continue to highlight the accomplishments of visual arts in themselves, though it may still prove necessary once in a while to remind folks of what an ass Stephen Harper really is, as circumstances dictate.
